An Introduction to Geopolitics

This course provides a basic understanding of geopolitics relating to the analysis of political processes in geographical contexts. It offers (1) an introduction to key concepts (i.e. sovereignty, power/politics/policy, scale, agents, codes, boundaries), (2) discusses current geopolitical issues (military, economic, cultural, technological, environmental and societal) in different regions of the world and (3) connects these to significant historical transformations. The course will be organized into thematical units dealing with particular areas of the world, while also leaving room for discussion on current affairs.
By the end of the course you will have:
- Developed your knowledge on key concepts in geopolitics and international relations
- Improved your awareness of contemporary geopolitical challenges in different regions of the world, as well as the global issues relating to climate change and biodiversity
- Reenforced your capacity to do independent research alone and in a team, using appropriate sources
- Enhanced your oral presentation skills by using data efficiently
- Learned to write a policy brief
- Improved your grammar, spelling and vocabulary
