Understanding the molecular structure of substances such as metabolites, active ingredients, toxins, proteins, catalysts and materials is fundamental to understand their functionality and reactivity. In order to link structure and chemical performance, in the first part of the course we will discover the principles of NMR spectroscopy, one of the main structural determination techniques in chemistry. It focuses on the interaction of nuclear spins with a magnetic field.

The second part of the lecture will be dedicated to equip students with the fundamental tools to understand, predict, and control chemical reactivity, an essential foundation for advanced research in organic synthesis, catalysis, and molecular design.

Each section of this course will be enriched with examples drawn from a wide range of molecules and materials, which will not only help to understand the use NMR, and to discuss its limits, but also to comprehend chemical reactivity.
