This course provides an overview of advanced optical imaging techniques for biomedical applications.

Following an introduction to the fundamental concepts of light propagation and light–tissue interaction, several techniques will be presented, including fluorescence, polarimetric, and speckle imaging, as well as optical coherence tomography (OCT). Novel approaches to endoscopic imaging will also be presented.

The course includes theoretical lectures introducing the fundamental concepts and operating principles of the optical imaging techniques presented, together with experimental sessions in which students work directly with optical imaging systems and explore practical aspects of the optical instrumentation for biomedical applications.

By the end of the course, students will have acquired a solid understanding of the main theoretical and experimental concepts underlying the optical imaging techniques presented.

They will also become familiar with major medical challenges for which these technologies can provide innovative solutions, establishing a direct link between fundamental optical principles, technological development, and clinical applications.
