SPEAK YOUR MIND Upper-Intermediate – Adriana Yue

Inspired by C1 level themes and trending global issues on culture and media, this course aims to guide students using ambitious vocabulary to speak their mind cohesively and coherently on various talking points on the following themes:

 

1. Arts & Culture

Low-brow art vs High-brow art: Why some genres of art do not get the level of recognition they are due.

 

2.  Journeys and self-discoveries

Attitudes around the world on taking a gap semester or year are explored through blog essays, articles and a Ted talk presentation on finding strength through adversity.

 

3.  Stereotypes in Media and Workplace

Some stereotypes could be seen as harmful and/or harmless by various sections of society. How can society defy these stereotypes at work?

 

4.  Technology and Innovation

Is the direction technological development taking on the whole helping us to overcome

humanity’s big problems?

 

5.  Media and its role in society today

The ever-evolving media landscape plays various roles in society. Are we fully aware of its impacts and the pervasiveness of fake news on us professionally?

 

6.  Crime and Society

A deep dive into contrasting attitudes on crime and punishment in:

  1. Singapore and France
  2. Norway and The United States of America

What are some of the merits and downsides of each incarceration system?

 

Language skills and assessment

 

Through the use of ambitious vocabulary suitable for B2+ C1 level students, all students are expected to participate actively, meaningfully and complete classwork and assignments.

Speaking & presentations: Discussions, debates oral presentations (applying signposting language)

Oral comprehension: Listening to audio recordings and watching documentary

and film extracts

Reading: Press articles and online research, as well as vocabulary

Acquisition

Writing: Factual or opinion pieces and 200-word summaries
