
This course explores the intricate interplay between art and politics; examining how artistic expression can both shape and be shaped by political power. Together; we will investigate the role of art as a tool for state propaganda; a voice for countercultures; and a medium for self-expression. Hopefully; it will offer you insight and inspiration to express yourselves and create your own politically impactful artistic projects. Key Topics: Art as State Propaganda Focus on historical and contemporary examples of state-sponsored art used to promote political agendas; from the Tudors to the Obamas. Fight the Power! Explore artistic movements that have challenged and resisted dominant political and cultural narratives; from the Beat Generation to punk rock; rap; and street art. III. Express Yourselves! Examine the role of art in social and political revolutions; including the Civil Rights Movement; or feminist and LGBTQ+ activism. Study the impact of digital technology and social media on political art and activism.
