Through its Action plan on professional equality between women and men, École Polytechnique is firmly committed to promoting gender equality. As such, the Provost's Office and the Directorate of Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility invite you to participate in a training session designed by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, titled " Gender Inequalities in Higher Education and Research Current Trends and Pathways for Action ".

The session will be led by:

  • Étienne Ollion, a CNRS Senior Researcher in Sociology at Center for Research in Economics and Statistiques (CREST) and a lecturer at École Polytechnique (Department of Humanities and Social Sciences).
  • Loïa Lamarque, PhD in Social Sciences and lecturer at École Polytechnique (Department of Humanities and Social Sciences) and Sciences Po Paris. Her doctoral research examines how women’s power within couples influences the physical and economic well-being of children.
While the overall proportion of female students in universities is increasing, women remain underrepresented in certain fields, particularly in mathematics and engineering. This horizontal segregation is compounded by vertical segregation, characterized by a gradual decline in the presence of women as one ascends the academic hierarchy.

The objective of this two-hour interactive workshop is to provide a synthesis of research in this field. Several themes will be addressed: the history and current state of gender studies in the social sciences, to clarify the issues at stake; the evolution of women’s roles in higher education and research, including a discussion of attrition as they advance in the academic hierarchy; the role of gender in academic evaluations; the place of women in higher education; the issues of sexuality, sexist, and sexual violence within the academic environment.

Drawing on both classic and recent social science research, this session aims to deepen understanding and provide concrete tools to address how gender structures the functioning of universities.

Following the "Welcome Day for incoming Faculty" event last November, this two-hour training on gender inequalities in higher education and research will now be part of the onboarding process for all new faculty at École polytechnique, regardless of their status. It will also be open to department and laboratory heads, as well as any faculty members who wish to attend.

Target audience: Newly arrived faculty , all faculty membrers, department heads, laboratory heads, deputy laboratory heads, and any staff or students interested in the topic.
