This English course explores major global issues through diverse perspectives, using South-East Asia as a springboard. We will be covering the following topics :

  1. Stereotypes and cultural differences
  2. National identity – historical and recent changes
  3. Attitudes towards social rules
  4. Cultural celebrations
  5. Relations with neighbouring countries
  6. Politics and corruption
  7. Small businesses and artisans vs global business
  8. Economic competition and brain drain

Students will examine contemporary challenges such as globalization, climate change, migration, economic inequality, technological change, cultural identity, and social justice, with particular attention to how these issues affect and are understood across Asia. They will compare these to issues from their own countries or continents, bringing personal anecdotes and information.

Through articles, current affairs, multimedia materials, discussions, presentations, and written assignments, students will develop the English language skills needed to engage critically with global topics. The course encourages students to compare perspectives, question dominant narratives, and consider the cultural, historical, political, and economic contexts that shape debates about global issues.

By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate ideas clearly and effectively in academic English, evaluate information from a range of sources, participate confidently in discussions and debates, and develop informed arguments from an Asian and globally comparative perspective.
